Imagine running not just to notch up another achievement on your fitness tracker but also to make a tangible difference. The HopeXchange Race, held two weeks before Christmas in Birkirkara—the largest locality in Malta—offers runners the chance to do exactly that by participating in 5 km and 10 km races or joining their kids' race. This event takes place during the heart of December when the Mediterranean winter brings mild temperatures ideal for outdoor running: cool mornings with occasional sunshine, but also a possibility of light showers. The race starts and finishes on Salvu Psaila Street, right in Birkirkara’s bustling center. The route weaves through the town's main roads and side streets, offering an urban course that is smooth and easy to navigate without any significant obstacles. Along the way, participants will find a water station at the halfway point of the 10 km race, as well as distance markers guiding them throughout their journey. While traffic control measures are in place thanks to marshals regulating vehicles along the route, runners should be mindful of sticking to sidewalks where possible for safety reasons. The event’s name encapsulates its spirit: every runner contributes directly to a charity fund by signing up, turning each step into an act of generosity and goodwill. The race welcomes participants from age 15 upwards for the longer distance and as young as 11 for the shorter one, with medals awarded at the finish line regardless of category. The event also includes a special kids' race that is part of a series held across Malta throughout the year. As winter transforms the Maltese islands into picturesque scenes reminiscent of nativity displays, participants will find presepji—meticulous Christmas cribs—displayed from village to village and Baroque facades illuminated in festive lights. Birkirkara’s St. Helen’s Basilica stands out as a highlight, while the former railway line converted into a promenade provides an ideal spot for cooling down post-race. To warm up after crossing the finish line, runners can indulge in traditional Maltese treats such as imbuljuta tal-Qastan—a hot drink made with chestnuts and cocoa—paired with qagħaq tal-għasel, honey rings that are a holiday staple. Ten kilometers of solidarity mixed with festive cheer: this race is more than just a run; it’s an experience that warms the heart as much as the legs. Join us in Birkirkara for the HopeXchange Race and be part of something meaningful this Christmas season.
