As dawn breaks over Spokane on June 20th, the air carries the scent of pine from nearby forests as runners gather to embark on their journey through varied terrain. Riverside State Park offers lush greenery with its winding paths, while Mt. Spokane State Park presents steeper inclines and panoramic views that challenge even seasoned athletes. The Reardan Cross Country track in Seven Mile provides a smooth yet rigorous surface for those navigating the distance courses. Each venue is meticulously chosen to offer both beauty and difficulty.
This event has been part of Phase One Mission since its inception, fostering a sense of camaraderie among participants who support each other through long hours on challenging terrain. The 101 Miler course, with a total of 65 laps covering 101.4 miles, is the ultimate test for ultra-runners. Completers earn the coveted Phase One Buckle as recognition for their achievement. Similarly, runners tackling the 100K and 50K distances also strive to earn tokens or buckles that symbolize their perseverance in the face of adversity.
The course itself winds through multiple areas within Spokane’s rich natural landscapes, offering diverse terrain from forest trails to open fields at Reardan Cross Country track. Each lap is approximately 1.56 miles long for all distance categories except the KidDo Sprint The Hill challenge which spans a shorter but no less challenging .3-mile sprint up and down "the hill." Aid stations are strategically placed along the routes, providing essential hydration, nutrition, and support to runners.
Aid station facilities include Endurance Fuel by Tailwind Nutrition, NeverSecond 30g carb gels, 1st Phorm protein bars, energy drinks, water, and additional snack options. These provisions cater specifically to endurance needs, ensuring participants can maintain their pace without compromising on nutrition or hydration. Crew access is available in designated areas of the parking lot near the start location.
