A distinctive feature of this winter edition is its anti-clockwise direction, setting it apart from the summer event's clockwise routing.
Participants who tackle both the summer and winter 45-mile courses in a single year earn an exclusive GMU buckle as recognition for their dedication and endurance. These buckles come in four tiers based on cumulative completion times across both events: under 15 hours, under 18 hours, under 21 hours, and under 24 hours.
