Experience the scenic beauty of Virginia’s Northern Neck at the 2026 River Ride, taking place on Saturday, October 10. This year's event offers four distinct distance options: 10 miles for beginners and casual riders starting from historic Shiloh School, or challenge yourself with routes measuring 20, 29, 40, and a metric century at 65 miles. Each route weaves through the region’s most picturesque backroads. The ride commences and concludes at Lancaster Elementary School on School Road in Kilmarnock, VA 22482. Whether you’re an experienced cyclist or just looking to enjoy the countryside, there's a distance that suits your pace and skill level. Rest stops are plentiful along each route, offering ample water, snacks, and volunteer support. SAG vehicles will be patrolling the course to ensure safety throughout. For those new to cycling or seeking a more relaxed day out on two wheels, the 10-mile beginner/casual ride is perfect. This loop takes you through peaceful farm roads around Shiloh School at State Route 606. Participants can register for this route from $50 and enjoy a pre-event check-in from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on the same day. The main routes, ranging from 20 miles up to the metric century distance of 104 kilometers (approximately 65 miles), showcase some of Virginia’s most scenic landscapes. Pre-race maps are available for download, and final versions will be distributed closer to the event date. Participants can expect painted arrows marking each turn along their chosen route. After your ride, immerse yourself in Kilmarnock's Fall Festival at Town Centre Park before heading over to CAMP Irvington for an After Party from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Registration is open now with fees starting at $75 per participant; day-of-event surcharges may apply. Your registration covers insurance, rest stop supplies, advertising and logistics, as well as a complimentary event T-shirt. A portion of the entry fee benefits the Northern Neck Bike Club, a nonprofit organization dedicated to trail building, youth mentoring, and community empowerment through cycling. Additional T-shirts can be purchased during registration for $15 each. E-bikes are welcome on routes where pedal-assisted Class 1 and Class 3 e-bikes comply with Virginia traffic laws. Helmets are mandatory; an ANSI or SNELL certified helmet is required. For those bringing young children, the 10-mile route allows riders under 18 accompanied by a parent who signs a waiver. Food options abound at rest stops, including water and snacks, as well as nearby convenience stores where participants can grab refreshments along their journey. Box lunches are available for the longer routes; sign up during registration to have one ready when you need it most. For those wishing to explore more after your ride, Virginia’s River Realm offers a wide range of accommodations from luxury hotels to charming bed and breakfasts. The event also encourages volunteering; contact details are provided if you wish to lend a hand. Early check-in is available starting at 6:00 PM on the day before the ride for those looking to secure their spot early. Check-in officially opens at 6:30 AM, with rides departing throughout the morning. Riders should plan to complete their route by no later than 3:00 PM and be aware that rest stops will close by 4:00 PM. About Kilmarnock
Learn more about the host city, Kilmarnock.
Kilmarnock is a town in Ayrshire in southwest Scotland, with a population of 46,970 in 2020. It's industrial, though many of its historic industries have gone, such as BMK Carpets, Massey Ferguson Tractors and the Johnnie Walker whisky blending plant. It's the seat of local government for East Ayrshire, a commuter town for Glasgow, and stands astride several transport corridors. So you might break a journey at one of its edge-of-town hotels, but you're only likely to visit the centre for business or family connections.
