This unique event features 45 runners navigating five distinct courses over a grueling 150-hour period, with no pavement in sight. Each route offers a mix of single-track trails, dirt roads, and ATV paths, all set against a backdrop of the Colorado River’s jaw-dropping vistas and desolate desert landscapes.
The race format is as unconventional as it gets, designed to push runners out of their comfort zones. The first journey sees everyone following a predetermined course sequence that remains secret until just before each leg begins. Subsequent journeys introduce elements like random route selection via straws or alternating routes based on arrival order, culminating in an unbound phase where runners choose their own paths.
The courses themselves are meticulously mapped and range from 6.6 miles to 12.6 miles with varying elevation gains, totaling approximately 5908 feet of ascent over the entire journey. The terrain is rugged yet mesmerizing, offering moments of solitude that foster deep reflection.
Crewed and uncrewed divisions cater to different preferences, but only those in the uncrewed category are eligible for a lifetime entry prize if they emerge victorious. For those who choose the crewed option, assistance from dedicated support teams at home base is allowed within strict guidelines.
Aid stations provide essential supplies including hot meals like burgers and quesadillas, alongside cold snacks such as PB&J sandwiches and fruit. Runners are encouraged to bring their own cooking gear for personalized culinary needs. The race is cupless, so participants must come prepared with reusable cups or collapsible containers.
The event’s rules emphasize self-reliance and navigation skills, requiring runners to carry separate GPX files for each course and adhere strictly to the no-pacer policy throughout the competition.
