The Saddleback Marathon returns to Silverado, California on November 7th, marking another year of the event's storied history along the challenging trails of Black Star Canyon in the Cleveland National Forest. This race is a significant part of the local running calendar and has been re-routed multiple times over the years due to wildfires affecting nearby Blue Jay campgrounds. In response to these disruptions, the course was shifted to safer areas such as Trabuco District's Black Star Canyon for 2025 and will remain there in 2026.
On race morning, runners can expect cool temperatures around Silverado, with a firm yet slightly soft trail surface underfoot due to recent weather conditions. The day is expected to be clear and calm, making it ideal for distance running through the scenic trails of Black Star Canyon Road. Race participants will gather at 6:00 am for check-in before setting off on their respective distances. The Saddleback Marathon has been an annual event since 1988 but faced cancellations in recent years due to wildfires and the pandemic, only resuming full-scale operations from 2019 onwards. The race supports local causes and traditions that resonate deeply with participants and spectators alike. Each year sees a robust turnout of runners drawn by the unique course and challenging terrain. The marathon route begins on Black Star Canyon Road, following a truck trail along the creek for approximately two-and-a-half miles before ascending several switchbacks into Mariposa Reserve at N. Main Divide. From there, participants travel back to Skyline Drive in Corona via Black Star Canyon Road, completing their 42.2K journey with an elevation gain of over four thousand feet. Runners will encounter aid stations every few miles along the course. In addition to the full marathon, this year’s event includes a half-marathon and a new 25k distance that follows the same initial path before turning back at Mariposa Reserve for runners not completing the entire 42.2K route. The half-marathoners follow much of the same terrain but turn around earlier near a historic Indian village, while the 10k race offers a shorter yet equally challenging experience with its own set of switchbacks and turns. Registration can be completed online via https://ultrasignup.com/register.aspx?did=126480. Fees range from $70 for the 10K to $110 each for both the half marathon and full marathon, including a new addition this year: the 25k option priced at $110 as well. Participants should plan to arrive between 6:00 am and 7:00 am on race day for bib pickup. The start line is located along Black Star Canyon Road in Silverado, where runners will begin their journey through varied terrain marked by creek crossings and steep climbs interspersed with flatter stretches of the canyon. Age requirements are open to all eligible participants who meet the registration age minimums specified online; first-timers should review course maps available on the website for detailed information. The Saddleback Marathon in Silverado, California will take place on November 7th, offering runners a unique blend of challenging terrain and scenic views through Black Star Canyon. This event is worth attending not just for its rigorous test of endurance but also as an opportunity to support local traditions and causes deeply rooted within the community’s running culture.
