The Three Shires Fell Race

About the Event

The Three Shires Fell Race, steeped in tradition and now reimagined for the modern runner, invites participants to explore stunning landscapes across Coniston and Little Langdale fells. The race begins at Tilberthwaite Farm, where runners will embark on an anti-clockwise journey through breathtaking terrain.
Key checkpoints along this challenging route include Lingmoor Fell, Pike of Blisco, Three Shires Stone, Great Carrs, Wetherlam, and the Tarn before returning to Tilberthwaite. Each checkpoint marks a significant milestone in what promises to be a grueling yet rewarding experience for fell runners.
Parking has been made more convenient at the start/finish field in Tilberthwaite, allowing participants easy access and fostering a friendly atmosphere among competitors. Car sharing is encouraged to minimize environmental impact while maximizing social interaction before and after the race.
As part of the prestigious Lakeland Classics Trophy series for 2026, this event offers runners an opportunity to compete against some of the best in the region. The route itself presents a formidable challenge with remote stretches that demand top-notch navigation skills and physical endurance. Full Fell Runners Association (FRA) kit is mandatory, and all participants will undergo a thorough equipment check prior to registration.
Navigational aids are limited; GPS devices are not permitted for this race, nor are there flags marking the entire course beyond brief sections near Lingmoor Fell and Tilberthwaite Gill. This year’s event also includes an FRA GPS tracker trial, providing runners with additional insights into their performance while adhering to traditional fell running principles.
With a start time set at 11:00 AM and a strict cut-off of 14:15 PM at Three Shires Stone (Wrynose Pass), the race demands precision in pacing. Only those aged 18 or over are eligible, ensuring that all participants have the necessary experience to tackle this demanding course.
The Three Shires Fell Race is more than just a competition; it’s an invitation to immerse oneself in the beauty and challenge of Lakeland's rugged terrain, connecting runners with nature through rigorous physical activity.
