Dive into the heart of Florida's wilderness with Sombrero Running Events at the 6th annual Mother’s 50k & Trail Marathon, an adventure that promises to be anything but typical. Nestled within Jennings State Forest near Middleburg, this race invites runners to explore the stunning Pioneer Trail—a hidden gem in northeast Florida. The trail itself is a testament to diversity and beauty, offering sections with unique terrain characteristics. One of its most notable features is Section 4, spanning 2.7 miles, which boasts some of the steepest climbs and technical challenges you'll find anywhere in the Sunshine State. This section also rewards runners with breathtaking views over Black Creek Ravines. Both the Marathon (26.2 miles) and the 50k routes follow an out-and-back format that showcases all five sections of this meticulously maintained trail system, featuring a mix of flat stretches, scenic single-track paths, and water crossings. The course begins at Dunn's Farm Trailhead and ventures into new territory with the recently added Cross Cut section—a tranquil 2.5-mile stretch before diving into Section 4’s rugged terrain. Runners will navigate through lush landscapes, cross over Mt. Reagan (yes, Florida does have its own mini-mountains), and pass through a serene "enchanted forest" along the way. The marathon course features just under two thousand feet of elevation gain/loss, while the more ambitious 50k route extends this journey with an additional out-and-back segment in Section 5. Aid stations are strategically placed every few miles to ensure runners stay hydrated and fueled throughout their adventure. Each station offers water, electrolyte drinks (Tailwind/Skratch), and other essential nutrition for endurance racing. Porta potties will be available at key turnaround points and the finish line. Participants can look forward to a race atmosphere that encourages camaraderie over competition, with Sombrero Running Events fostering an inclusive environment where everyone is welcome to enjoy the beauty of nature together. Awards are given to overall top three finishers in each category as well as masters awards starting from age 50 and the coveted "Slow A$$" honors for those who cross the line last but certainly not least. For lodging, runners can book rooms at Hampton Inn & Suites located just ten miles away from the start/finish area. Technical race shirts are available to all participants with a guaranteed shirt cut-off date of January 1, 2025. Join us as we celebrate this remarkable trail system and support local organizations such as Friends of Florida State Forests and Foundations of Freedom in their mission to maintain these natural wonders and provide essential services for community recovery programs.
