About the Event

Dive into the rugged beauty and breathtaking landscapes of Morocco’s High Atlas Mountains for an unforgettable trail running experience at Trail Atlas Oukaimeden, held annually early July. Nestled near the ski resort town of Oukaimeden, this event transforms serene winter slopes into challenging summer trails that cater to runners of all levels.
The terrain is a mix of high-altitude desert and lush oases, offering both technical challenges and stunning vistas. Runners will traverse ancient Berber paths, cross rocky outcrops, and scale passes requiring true mountaineering skills. Highlights include the summit of Oukaimeden, the Col de Tizi n'Eddi pass, and the scenic valley of Ourika.
With eight distinct races over two days, there’s an event for every runner:
- The "Challenge L'Ouka" (67 km) pushes even the most seasoned trail runners with 3860 meters of elevation gain.
- The "Trail Imnane" (42 km), a grueling yet rewarding route that tests both endurance and technical skills.
- For those seeking an intense but shorter adventure, there's the "Trail of the Three Summits" (25 km) or the more accessible but still challenging "Trail of the Valley" (21 km).
- The gentler options include the 16-kilometer "Trail of the Chalets," and a family-friendly mini race ("Mini Trail Awoto") covering just 10 kilometers.
- Youngsters can also join in with their own 3-km course.
The weather is ideal for trail running, offering pleasant temperatures between 15°C to 25°C without the oppressive heat found in urban areas. Long days allow ample time to explore and appreciate the unique desert mountain landscapes that few tourists ever see.
Beyond the race itself, participants can immerse themselves in Morocco’s rich culture by visiting nearby Berber villages or exploring Marrakech just an hour away. Enjoy traditional Moroccan cuisine such as tagine, couscous, pastilla, street skewers, and sweet pastries like corne de gazelle, all washed down with a soothing cup of mint tea.
