Turnhouse Hill Race

The Turnhouse Hill race, nestled within the Pentland Hills Regional Park near Edinburgh, offers an exhilarating challenge for experienced hill runners. The senior course spans 5.2 kilometers with a significant elevation gain of 310 meters, featuring steep ascents and descents that will test even seasoned athletes. Starting just before nightfall at 7:30 PM, the race begins from Flotterstone car park, located off the A702 near Lothianburn bypass.
Runners are advised to wear hill shoes due to the rugged terrain and steep climbs through heather-covered slopes. The route is mostly track but becomes more challenging as it rises towards the summit where runners must navigate uneven ground.
For younger athletes aged 10-15, a shorter race of 2.2 kilometers with an elevation gain of 160 meters awaits at 7:35 PM on the same evening. This free event is open to all and requires no pre-registration.
Participants should collect their numbers from near Pentland café in Flotterstone car park starting at 6:15 PM. Due to limited parking, organizers recommend carpooling or using public transportation options like bus routes 101 or 102 for those traveling by Houston buses, which can drop you off close to the start point.
Limited toilet facilities are available behind Pentland café but there are no changing rooms or showers at the venue. Safety is paramount; runners must carry full body cover and a whistle as per Scottish Hill Racing rules, though the course will be well marshaled with signs and guidance along the way.
