Nestled within the serene landscape of Gutierrez Canyon Open Space, off Highway 14 near Cedar Crest, New Mexico, lies an exhilarating trail running experience that promises adventure and breathtaking views. This race, whether you're tackling a challenging 52k distance or enjoying one of two shorter courses (the 13k loop or the extended 26k), offers runners a unique blend of natural beauty and technical terrain. The event begins at an early hour to make the most of the cooler morning temperatures. Participants in the 52k race will set off at 8 AM, with the 13k/26k distances following shortly after at 9 AM. All competitors are subject to a generous time limit—ten hours for all races and seven-and-a-half hours specifically for the fourth lap of the ultra-distance event. The course itself is an approximately 13-kilometer loop, characterized by its smooth single-track trails that wind through dense Juniper forests and rocky outcrops. Each lap includes over a thousand feet of elevation gain, providing both scenic vistas and challenging climbs to keep runners engaged throughout their journey. Aid stations are thoughtfully placed along the route: one at the start/finish line in the Gutierrez Canyon Open Space parking lot and another conveniently located around 4.6 miles into your run. Here, participants can expect a variety of refreshments including water, Skratch electrolyte drink, chips, cookies, bananas, vegetable soup or broth, and an assortment of salty and sweet snacks to fuel their efforts. In line with the event's commitment to sustainability, this race is cup-less, encouraging runners to bring reusable bottles or cups from home. For those interested in supporting local initiatives, Running Wild offers a $5 reusable cup option available during packet pickup at Rumor Brewing on February 19th between 4:30 PM and 6:30 PM, or at the start/finish line on race day starting at 7:30 AM. Packet pick-up also serves as an opportunity to meet fellow runners and gather all necessary materials for your run. The event organizers are committed to ensuring a smooth experience from registration through finish line celebrations. Additionally, those who qualify under specific categories such as New Mexico students, teachers, first responders, active duty military personnel, or veterans can receive discounts by contacting the race coordinator at austin@runningwildusa.com. Upon crossing the finish line, runners will be rewarded with unique and thoughtful swag—a pair of cozy wool socks to celebrate their achievement instead of traditional medals. Join us in Gutierrez Canyon for an unforgettable running experience that combines challenging terrain with stunning scenery and supportive community engagement.
