Experience the legendary Vermont Rare Gravel Ride once again as it returns for its 12th year. This adventure awaits seasoned and novice gravel enthusiasts alike, offering a blend of familiar favorites alongside exciting new routes. Starting from Wild Wings XC ski center, this ride promises to challenge both your physical limits and spirit with an expected distance of about 40 miles. The terrain is steeped in Vermont's rich history, featuring five sections classified as Class IV, including the notorious Johnson Hill Road, which reaches a grueling 19% incline. The route takes you through picturesque landscapes, from rolling hills to dense forests, offering breathtaking views and diverse challenges that test your skills on both paved roads and off-road trails. Highlights include Turner Road, Highway 26 to Moses Pond; Middletown Road to Marsh Hill; Johnson Hill is back for another thrilling ascent; Little Michigan to Stone Place; Hapgood Pond Campground to North Road. For those who find the terrain too demanding, some sections allow dismounting and walking or jogging. The ride emphasizes enjoyment over speed, encouraging a pace that suits you best while adhering to basic road rules. Weather conditions in Vermont can be unpredictable, so it's essential to prepare accordingly with 38mm tires or larger for better traction on the challenging paths. A sturdy gravel bike is recommended but not mandatory; any cross or flat-bar mountain bike will suffice. The ride includes two refueling stations: one at approximately 14 miles and another around 28 miles, both stocked with GU gels, hydration packs, bananas, pickles, syrup shots, and more. Participants are advised to carry their own water supply as well. On race day, ample parking is available at Wild Wings Nordic Center. Follow Hapgood Road east from Peru Center; take the left onto North Road after passing through town garage, continuing for about two miles before turning left again approximately 500 meters later on. This will lead you to your starting point. Vermont Rare Gravel Ride supports rare disease research and advocacy, with all proceeds going directly towards this cause. The event not only offers an unforgettable experience but also a platform to contribute positively to the community.
