Waikato Bay of Plenty 2026 Cross Country Championships
About the Event
The 2026 Championship Cross Country event, hosted by Athletics Waikato-Bay of Plenty, is set to challenge runners with its unique blend of scenic beauty and competitive spirit. This championship offers athletes the opportunity to compete for medals and honors while enjoying a picturesque course in Kihikihi Domain. Athletes who are registered members of an affiliated club within the region will have the chance to earn Championship accolades by wearing their official uniform during the race. The event is open to all runners, regardless of affiliation status, but only those from Waikato-Bay of Plenty clubs can claim championship honors and medals. The course features a 1km loop and a 2km loop designed to test endurance and agility. For odd-distance races such as the 3km and 5km events, participants will start with one lap on the shorter circuit before moving onto the longer route. Even distances like the 4km race involve repeated laps of the 2km course. The terrain is a mix of flat sections interspersed with slight elevations, providing varied challenges throughout each loop. The surface is firm and suitable for running shoes or spikes up to 9-12mm in length. Wooden barriers approximately knee-high are strategically placed along the route, requiring runners to navigate carefully around them. Kihikihi Domain serves as both the venue headquarters and starting point of this outdoor event. Early arrivals can park at the domain's driveway area; additional parking is available on Oliver Street when needed. The facilities include portable toilets but no shelter, so participants are advised to bring their own drinking water and prepare for all types of weather conditions. Club tents will be set up in designated areas with flat grass surfaces where members can rest between events or gather before the race starts. It’s important that these tents remain secure using pegs or straps as per safety guidelines. Medal presentations follow immediately after each event concludes near the finish line, ensuring there is no delay for runners to celebrate their achievements right away. Athletes' grades are determined based on age categories, with Masters competitors being classified according to their exact age on race day (18th July 2026). Participants must collect a unique race number from the registration desk at the Athletics WBOP Gazebo prior to starting their event. Entries close by Thursday, 16 July at 11:59 PM with no refunds available after this deadline. This championship promises an engaging experience for all runners, combining competitive racing with scenic routes and supportive club environments in a memorable day of athletic competition.
