The Andrew Heywood Windgater Fell Race, celebrating its 20th anniversary, offers runners an exhilarating journey through the rugged terrain of the Goyt Valley. Starting at 11am sharp, participants embark on a scenic and challenging course that spans approximately half marathon distance—21.5 kilometers or about 13.5 miles—with significant elevation changes totaling 760 meters (2,500 feet) in ascent and descent. This race is not your typical road event; it's an off-road adventure through the tracks and trails of the Goyt Valley, culminating at Shining Tor for breathtaking views. The route winds its way around picturesque landscapes, providing runners with a unique blend of natural beauty and technical challenges. Competitors should be prepared to carry full Fell Runners Association (FRA) kit: waterproof clothing complete with taped seams and an integrated hood, hat and gloves, map of the course, compass, whistle, and emergency food supplies. A water bottle or hydration system is also recommended, along with a basic first aid kit. Water stations are strategically placed at two points on the route to help runners stay hydrated during their climb up Shining Tor and subsequent descents back down into the valley. Hot food and drinks await participants upon crossing the finish line. Given its muddy sections and steep climbs, sturdy footwear with excellent traction is essential for navigating this challenging course effectively. While not strictly a fell race, it caters to runners who may have limited experience in mountain terrain but are eager to take on new challenges under guidance from experienced organizers. Pre-entry ensures guaranteed participation; however, entries will be accepted on the day if spots remain available at an additional cost of £16.00 (if any). All proceeds benefit Buxton Rotary's efforts for local and international charitable causes.
