Experience the thrill of Calgary’s trail running scene with the YYC Sub Ultra, an exciting race that caters to both newcomers and seasoned runners alike. Set against the backdrop of Nose Hill Park on August 29, 2027, this event offers three distinct distances: a challenging 34km route for those seeking adventure, a scenic 17km course designed specifically for women as part of the Wild Rose Women's Sub Ultra division, and a shorter yet invigorating 6.2km option that’s perfect for runners looking to explore without overexerting themselves. The race promises an unforgettable journey through some of Calgary’s most beautiful trails, offering participants breathtaking views and varied terrain. The longer routes feature significant elevation changes—1000 meters for the full 34km course and 500 meters for the 17km route—which add to the challenge while providing a rewarding sense of accomplishment. Participants will enjoy expertly designed courses with clear markings, ensuring that runners can focus on their journey without worrying about navigation. The event is supported by dedicated medical staff and safety personnel stationed along the course, guaranteeing peace of mind for all competitors. Race day excitement begins early in the morning as participants gather at Nose Hill Park's Shaganappi Trail/Edgemont Blvd NW parking lot. Starting times vary based on distance: 7:00 am marks the commencement of the full marathon effort with the 34km race, followed by the women’s exclusive 17km Wild Rose Women's Sub Ultra start at 8:30 am and a general male-start for all 17km runners at 8:45 am. The shorter trail walk/run kicks off at 9:30 am. Upon crossing the finish line, racers are greeted with an atmosphere filled with music, cheering crowds, and race announcer commentary. All participants receive official chip timing by Startline Timing to track their performance accurately. Additionally, all runners will be awarded a YYC Sub Ultra swag item such as a hat or water bottle, and those who finish the longer courses can look forward to receiving a sticky bun from Kashew Bakery. For families looking for an inclusive event experience, there’s also a 2km kids’ walk/run that starts at 10:45 am. This untimed division offers young participants their own YYC Sub Ultra swag item and finisher medal if they register before August 1st, 2027. The YYC Sub Ultra is more than just a race; it’s an opportunity to connect with nature, challenge yourself in stunning surroundings, and be part of a vibrant community of trail runners. Whether you’re taking your first steps into the world of ultra-running or pushing past personal limits on familiar trails, this event promises memories that will last long after the finish line is crossed. Package pickup for all participants can take place at Bow Cycle and Sports (6501 Bowness Road NW) from 12 pm to 2 pm on August 28th. Late package pick-up services are available until 10:15 am on race day, but please ensure you collect your items no later than 15 minutes before your start time. Join the Calgary Trail Run Community for a weekend filled with adventure and camaraderie as we celebrate trail running in all its forms at this year’s YYC Sub Ultra.
