Željava Air Base Half Marathon

The Željava Air Base Half Marathon 2026 is a unique running event held at the former Željava military air base, located at the foot of Mount Plješivica near the Croatian-Bosnian border. Scheduled for Saturday, May 2, 2026, the race allows participants to run on the original runways of what was once the largest underground airport in the former Yugoslavia. Because the terrain was built for military aviation, it is completely flat, making it a prime destination for runners aiming for personal bests. The air base is situated near the town of Korenica within the Plitvička Jezera municipality. This region is home to the world-renowned Plitvice Lakes National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The municipality has a population of approximately 4,400 residents. According to official census data, the demographic composition of the area is roughly 72.2% Croat and 24.5% Serb.
