13th XeSkouriaZo: A Mountain Running Race to Save Skouries
About the Event
Since its inception in 2013, the Xeskouriazo Trail race has been an annual gathering of runners and nature enthusiasts on Mount Kakavos in Megali Panagia, Halkidiki. Organized by the Association of Women of Megali Panagia, this event not only celebrates trail running but also champions environmental conservation, particularly against threats posed by gold-copper mining to the mountain's ecosystem. On Sunday, October 5, 2025, runners will converge at the village square in Megali Panagia for the twelfth iteration of Xeskouriazo. The race offers three distinct distances: a scenic 5km run around the charming village, a challenging 15km course through varied terrain on Mount Kakavos, and an adventurous 25km route that showcases the mountain's rugged beauty. Registration opens early for this year’s event, with participants able to sign up until September 21, 2025. Each race distance is designed to cater to different levels of experience and fitness, ensuring there are options suitable for everyone from beginners to seasoned trail runners. Following the completion of their respective courses, racers will be greeted by a traditional feast in Chorostasi Square, complete with live music and refreshments that celebrate local culture. The event also boasts recognition within international running communities; the 25km race is included in both ITRA (1 - ITRA Point) and UTMB Index rankings, while the 15km route has earned its place on the ITRA scoring system. For those looking to extend their stay beyond the day of racing, accommodation options are available. Free lodging can be arranged for up to ten people per room near Megali Panagia’s Holy Shrine, complete with bathroom facilities. Participants must bring their own bedding and sleeping gear and should contact organizers at least 10 days in advance via +306942678818. Alternatively, there is free camping available just a short distance outside of the village. The Xeskouriazo Trail race promises an unforgettable blend of physical challenge, cultural immersion, and environmental advocacy. Join us this October to experience the natural beauty of Mount Kakavos and contribute to the protection of its delicate ecosystem. Participants are encouraged to explore not only the mountain's trails but also the rich heritage of Megali Panagia through post-race festivities that highlight local traditions and hospitality. The event is more than a race; it’s an opportunity to connect with nature, community, and the broader mission of preserving Halkidiki’s unique environment for future generations. Whether you’re looking to push your limits on challenging terrain or simply enjoy a scenic run through picturesque landscapes, Xeskouriazo Trail offers something distinctive. Don’t miss this chance to be part of an event that unites passion for trail running with the fight against environmental threats in one of Greece’s most captivating settings.
