Grillenburg Backyard Ultra Marathon presents an intense endurance challenge set amidst the serene Tharandter Forest near Grillenburg, Germany. Organized by SC Freital e.V., this unique race begins on August 15, 2026, at 10:00 AM and continues hourly until only one participant remains. The event unfolds in a picturesque setting within the Jugendfreizeithof Grillenburg grounds, offering runners stunning views of nature while they navigate its challenging terrain. Participants will primarily run through winding forest paths that wind around Seerenteichstraße 11, Tharandt OT Grillenburg. The course layout is announced well before race day on SC Freital's website. The competition adheres to the international rules of a Backyard Ultra Marathon format: every hour, runners must complete one lap within an hour or drop out. Each loop measures approximately six miles and takes place either clockwise during daylight hours (from 6 AM) or counterclockwise at night (after 6 PM). Competitors are required to start each new loop on time; otherwise, they're disqualified. To ensure safety and fairness, the event has strict rules against shortcuts and outside assistance. Runners must carry their own gear and collect any waste produced during runs. Night runners should bring a flashlight or headlamp from 9:00 PM until dawn.
