The Back Mountain Triathlon, formerly known as the Wilkes Barre Triathlon, returns to Harveys Lake after a transformative reimagining that promises an exciting and inclusive experience for all participants. For 35 years, this iconic race has been a cornerstone event in the community, drawing athletes from across the United States, including renowned figures like Lance Armstrong and Mike Pigg. This year’s edition aims to recapture the essence of what made past races so special while introducing fresh elements that prioritize safety and enjoyment for everyone involved. The triathlon will now be organized as a non-profit event with proceeds directed towards local charities such as Harveys Lake Fire & Ambulance, Harveys Lake Little League, FoodDignity.org, and Northbranch Land Trust. The race course features familiar yet invigorating challenges: Swim: Participants kick off their journey in the serene waters of Harveys Lake. Swimmers will embark on a rectangular out-and-back swim covering 1500 meters (.93 mile), starting from the beach and retracing their path back to shore. Bike: Following the swim, athletes transition onto Lakeshore Drive for an exhilarating bike ride that takes them through scenic landscapes. The route includes two laps along Route 29 towards Noxen before returning via Buckwheat Hollow Road (Sordoni Hill), ending at Noxen Elementary School. Run: The final leg of the race sees runners heading out from Noxen Elementary, navigating a course that winds through local roads. Starting on Schoolhouse Rd and continuing onto Church Rd, Tulip Rd, and Hallowich Rd, athletes will complete 3.1 miles before turning back to the finish line at the school. Registration for this event is now open until August 22nd with early registration by August 13th ensuring participants receive a swag bag and race tee. On-site packet pickup will be available on Saturday, August 29th from noon to 4 PM at Lake Noxen Elementary School. Race day activities commence bright and early on Sunday, August 30th as officials and volunteers gather by 5 AM at Sandy Beach. Athletes are encouraged to arrive between 5:30 AM and 6:30 AM for body marking and transition set-up. The first wave of swimmers will hit the water promptly at 7 AM with the final waves starting shortly after. With official timing provided, participants have the chance to qualify for USAT Nationals through this sanctioned race. All registrants must be 18 years or older on the day of the event and provide their USAT membership number upon registration; one-day waivers are available for $15 at check-in. Join us in celebrating a beloved tradition reborn, offering an unforgettable experience for triathletes of all levels amidst stunning natural beauty.
