About the Event

The Werl Road Race - Sönnern Edition is an annual running event that brings together runners of all ages and skill levels for a day filled with competition, camaraderie, and community spirit. Scheduled to take place on Saturday, November 21, 2026, this race offers various distances and categories catering to everyone from young children to seasoned athletes.
The main races include a 5 km event starting at 11:00 AM and an open competition for both male and female runners across all age groups. Shortly after the 5 km start, there are shorter races specifically designed for younger participants. These include approximately 1200 meters races for U14/ U16 (ages 12-15) and U12 (ages 10-11), followed by an 850-meter race for children aged 6 to 7.
At noon, the event shifts gears with a challenging 10 km run open to both youth and adult runners. This is also when teams can participate in a mixed relay competition that spans all age categories over four legs of 2.5 kilometers each. Additional races include an 850-meter race for children aged 8-9, followed by a short 250-meter Bambinilauf for the very youngest runners.
All running routes are meticulously measured according to international standards set forth by IWR (International Walking and Running Rules). The courses wind through picturesque streets in Sönnern, offering participants an engaging mix of urban scenery and community landmarks. Notably, some shorter races take place on a pedestrian track near 'Am Türkenplatz,' adding variety to the event.
The race concludes with awards for top finishers in both 5 km and 10 km categories, including cash prizes for first-place winners and merchandise for second and third places. All participants receive medals or certificates as recognition of their achievement, while detailed results are available online through DLV (German Athletics Association) platforms.
Registration is open until November 18, 2026, with fees starting at just €3 for the children's races up to €9 for adults in the longer distances. Participants can also register on-site the day of the event if they miss the deadline online.
The race starts and finishes at the Sportplatz Sönnern located at Zum Türkenplatz 13, Werl (59457). With ample parking available near Mawick's premises nearby, participants are encouraged to arrive early for warm-ups or post-race refreshments. A traditional spritzing ceremony awaits runners as they cross the finish line.
