The Fengning Sparse Woodland Grassland Outdoor Carnival returns for its 3rd edition August 29-30 at the Yunman Sparse Woodland Grassland Eco-Tourism Resort in Fengning Manchu Autonomous County, Chengde, Hebei, with Desert, Gobi, Sparse Woodland, Sand River, and a family-friendly Open Grassland category. Registration is first-come, first-served, with early-bird pricing through August 10.
The Desert route (over 40km, 1,711m gain/loss, ITRA 1 point) starts at 4:00 AM with a 12-hour cutoff; the Gobi route (33.5km, 1,060m gain/loss) starts 6:00 AM with a 10-hour cutoff; the Sparse Woodland route (approx. 20.5km, approx. 592m gain/loss) starts 8:00 AM with an 8-hour cutoff; the Sand River route (approx. 16km, approx. 338m gain/loss) starts 8:00 AM with a 6-hour cutoff; the Open Grassland family route (approx. 8km, approx. 287m gain/loss) starts 8:05 AM with a 6-hour cutoff.
More than a race, this is an immersion in Manchu and Mongol steppe culture -- a rare belt of savanna woodland at 42°N linking desert, Gobi, and grassland terrain across one course, with a pre-race carnival and regional food at the finish.
