Welcome to the 9th Annual 4sta Hike, an invigorating endurance challenge set amidst the natural beauty of Loud Thunder Forest Preserve near Andalusia, Illinois. Nestled along the banks of the Mighty Mississippi River, this preserve offers a unique blend of serene trails and rugged terrain that will test even the most seasoned hikers. The heart of the event lies in its flexible course structure, allowing participants to choose their own adventure based on endurance and skill level. The main trail loop stretches for one mile with varying levels of difficulty—ranging from smooth singletrack paths to off-trail sections brimming with rocks, roots, and steep gradients that can reach up to a daunting 48% incline. For those seeking an extra challenge, the hard course is recommended, featuring a total elevation gain and loss of 304 feet per loop. This challenging route offers breathtaking views and encounters with wildlife such as deer, turkeys, coyotes, and snakes that often roam freely within the preserve’s lush trail network. Participants have four hours to explore this captivating landscape, aiming for personal bests or simply enjoying the journey at their own pace. The event encourages runners to make strategic pit stops every 10-30 minutes using chairs, tents, or any other recovery spots they bring along with them. A small aid station will be available at the Start/Finish line to ensure everyone stays hydrated and energized. As a testament to its popularity among hikers, current records stand at an impressive 9:29 for men and 11:49 for women on this challenging loop. The race culminates with awards given to male and female participants who complete the most loops within the time limit, fostering healthy competition while celebrating the spirit of perseverance. In addition to the thrilling experience on the trails, all registrants receive a commemorative shirt along with post-race refreshments including food and cold beverages. Most importantly, every registration contributes directly back to Loud Thunder Forest Preserve through proceeds from the event, ensuring that this natural gem continues to thrive for future generations to enjoy. Join us at 4sta Hike as we celebrate nature’s splendor while pushing our limits in a setting where every step brings new discoveries and challenges.
