8. Wermsdorf Marathon

The Wermsdorf Marathon offers runners more than just a race; it's an immersive journey through the picturesque landscapes of Central Saxony, blending history and nature into one unforgettable experience. Set to take place on July 18, 2026, this event starts at Alten Jagdschloss Wermsdorf, a historic landmark that serves as both a symbolic beginning and a testament to the region's rich heritage.
The route winds through diverse terrain, starting with an enchanting mix of natural beauty and cultural landmarks in its early stages. As runners progress towards Höfgen, known for its unique sensory experiences, they are treated to stunning views along the Mulde River valley. This section is particularly scenic, offering a blend of rolling hills and picturesque villages that highlight Central Saxony's charm.
From there, participants continue through Grimma, where historical architecture meets vibrant riverside life, before heading towards Nerchau. The race then takes an interesting turn as runners encounter more challenging terrain on their return journey via Cannewitz. This stretch includes some gentle inclines and rewarding vistas over fields and forests typical of the Wermsdorfer Land region.
With a distance of approximately 44 kilometers, this marathon is designed for those who enjoy scenic routes rather than competitive racing. The pace is relaxed at around 10 minutes per kilometer including all breaks, ensuring that every participant can appreciate the surroundings fully without feeling rushed or pressured by time constraints.
The event begins with a group departure from Sporthalle Wermsdorf on Sachsendorfer Strasse, where participants gather at 8:50 AM before heading to the start line. The race starts promptly at 9 AM and has an overall time limit of seven hours plus additional time based on individual paces.
Participants are asked to bring their own drinking cups due to environmental concerns, and a support vehicle will ensure that runners have access to food and drink along the way. Upon completion, results and certificates can be found published online through Race Result, while medals are awarded at the finish line.
This marathon is not an officially certified race by DLV (Deutsche Langstreckenverband) but instead focuses on providing a unique running experience for health-conscious athletes who enjoy exploring new landscapes. Runners should note that they must self-measure their total elapsed time using GPS watches or smartphones, and submit this information either in person at the finish line or via email/WhatsApp with clear evidence of distance covered.
Participants are responsible for obtaining their own insurance as organizers do not provide coverage nor assume liability for any damages incurred during the event. Photos and videos taken will be shared without compensation to document the memorable moments from each year's marathon.
