Since its inception in 1988, the Aldeburgh Boxing Day Swim has become a cherished tradition that brings together brave swimmers and enthusiastic spectators on the chilly morning of December 26th. Initiated by Dr Kevork Hopayian to aid victims of the Armenian earthquake, this annual event continues to raise vital funds for charity. This year's swim will take place at noon near the Moot Hall in Aldeburgh, where participants are invited to join a community effort supporting East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). The beachfront location is ideal for those who enjoy cold water swimming but should only be attempted by confident swimmers without medical conditions that could make the experience dangerous. Participants must arrive at least 30 minutes early to ensure a smooth entry, as parking can become quite busy and congested on this day. Once in the water, swimmers have up to one minute to brave the frigid sea—a moment that many describe as both exhilarating and challenging. For those who wish to take part, an online registration fee of £10 is required to cover insurance and medical support costs. While there are no official après-swell activities on New Year's Eve, swimmers can enjoy a complimentary hot chocolate at The White Lion Hotel following the event, generously offered by the hotel in support of this annual tradition. Spectators are welcome but asked to observe social distancing guidelines as they cheer from the shore or nearby vantage points. On-site donation buckets and card readers will be available for those who wish to contribute directly on the day, while online donations can also be made via JustGiving’s Aldeburgh Boxing Day Swim page. Whether you're a seasoned cold-water swimmer or simply looking to support a meaningful cause, this event promises an unforgettable experience.
