Borrowdale Fell Race is an exhilarating 27-kilometer (17-mile) journey through the rugged terrain of England’s Lake District, featuring over 650 participants who push their limits against challenging ascents and breathtaking views. The race begins at Scafell Hotel in Rosthwaite at precisely 11:00 am, with a finish line back where it all started. The course is designed to test the mettle of seasoned fell runners as they navigate through Chapel Farm and up Rottenstone Gill on their way to Bessy Boot. The race includes several critical checkpoints along the route, such as Styhead stretcher box, which closes at 2:20 pm, and Honister Hause checkpoint, closing at 3:30 pm. Competitors must have a proven track record of completing long and arduous fell races to qualify for this event. Those new to Borrowdale Fell Race are required to demonstrate experience by having completed at least two different category A or B long races, or four medium-length A-category races since January 1st, 2024. With a strict limit of 350 runners and no on-the-day entries accepted, this race is highly sought after among the fell running community. Participants must be prepared for all weather conditions by carrying essential safety gear such as waterproof full-body cover with taped seams and an attached hood, gloves, hat, map, compass, whistle, and emergency food. The use of GPS devices during navigation is strictly prohibited to ensure that runners rely on traditional orienteering skills throughout the race. Borrowdale Fell Race offers a unique blend of natural beauty and athletic challenge, making it a must-join event for serious fell running enthusiasts looking to test their limits in one of England’s most iconic landscapes.
