Immerse yourself in the stunning beauty of the Mendip Hills with the Butcombe Trail Ultra, an iconic self-navigation ultramarathon that offers runners two challenging routes: 50 miles and 50 kilometers. Both courses wind through a designated area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB), weaving around six historic pubs and showcasing breathtaking views across the rolling hills. Organized by Bristol’s Town & Country Harriers trail-running club, this event celebrates its roots in Sue Gearing's original hiking trail from 2007, which was transformed into an ultramarathon in 2016. The race starts and finishes at Mendip Activity Center, where runners will embark on a journey that combines rugged terrain with serene landscapes. The course is meticulously designed to cater to both seasoned ultra-runners and those looking for their first challenge beyond the marathon distance. It features generous cutoff times and well-stocked checkpoints along the way, ensuring participants receive ample support throughout the event. The race organizers are runners themselves who understand what it takes to make a great race day. In 2027, entry fees remain at 2026 levels, making this year's edition even more accessible for those eager to take on the challenge. Both distances qualify as index races for UTMB® and its sister events: the 50-mile route counts towards the 100 km category, while the 50-kilometer race qualifies under the 50 km classification. For runners tackling the 50-mile course, a prerequisite of having completed at least one trail marathon since January 2026 is required. The 50-kilometer route requires confidence in self-navigation but does not mandate prior experience with longer distances. Proceeds from this event benefit the Mendip Hills Fund, a community initiative dedicated to conserving and enhancing the environment, communities, and economy of the region. Over £20,000 has already been donated by Town & Country Harriers through previous race proceeds, highlighting their commitment to supporting local conservation efforts. Inclusivity is at the heart of this event, with both a Female prize category for those meeting England Athletics criteria and an Open prize category open to all competitors. The organizers are continually exploring ways to improve inclusiveness in racing. Participants should be aware that headphones are discouraged during the race due to safety concerns related to navigation and communication with marshals and fellow runners. Pacers can join from the final checkpoint, but only one is allowed per runner unless approved by the Race Director. Join us for an unforgettable adventure through some of England's most picturesque countryside, where every step offers a new perspective on nature’s beauty and your own endurance capabilities. The Butcombe Trail Ultra welcomes you to experience not just a race, but a journey that celebrates the spirit of exploration and community in one of Britain’s most scenic landscapes.
