About the Event

The City to Sea Marathon & Half Marathon offers runners an unforgettable journey along England’s stunning coastline. Starting at Exeter Quayside, participants follow the picturesque Exe Estuary towards Dawlish Warren before merging with the South West Coast Path. The half marathoners join in here and continue on a flat tarmac route that hugs the sea wall to Dawlish, then switch to hilly trails across Shaldon Bridge and through Babbacombe Downs.
The full marathon course winds along the estuary for much of its length, keeping the water on your left until you reach the coastal section. The South West Coast Path is well-marked with acorn signs, guiding runners through varied terrain that includes gravel paths and rugged trails leading to breathtaking views at Babbacombe Downs.
Participants can opt for a £10 coach transfer from Babbacombe back to their start point in time for the race’s conclusion. Upon crossing the finish line, all competitors receive a bespoke City to Sea medal and are treated to an ice cream or dairy/vegan alternative reminiscent of classic Mr Whippy flavors.
The event emphasizes self-sufficiency; runners must carry a mobile phone with emergency contact information provided in pre-race materials. Water bottles or hydration packs filled to at least 500ml (250ml for the half marathon) are mandatory, along with additional supplies like spare cups and race nutrition for sustained energy.
With cut-off times of eight hours for the full marathon and six hours for the half, this event challenges runners while celebrating the natural beauty of Devon’s coastline.
