Experience the unique blend of nature and tranquility along the Charente River during the Rochefort Bio-Marathon. Starting from Fouras, this course takes you through picturesque landscapes including the Saint Laurent de la Prée and Vergeroux regions before arriving at Rochefort. The route traverses the Natura 2000 site "Estuaire et Basse Vallée de la Charente," covering an expansive area of over 10,000 hectares from Ile d’Aix to Saint Savinien. As you run through this biologically rich zone, enjoy views of diverse flora and fauna. The estuary hosts a variety of species such as the Estuarine Angelica, European Otter, Elegant Avocet, Marsh Snipe, Alpine Rosebay Willowherb, and many more. This site aims to balance human activities with the preservation of its exceptional biodiversity. Upon reaching Rochefort, you'll run through the remarkable Transbordeur marshes. These wetlands are classified as a Sensitive Natural Space by the Department and designated as Natura 2000 sites by Europe. Spanning 600 hectares, they offer an array of habitats including over 160 different bird species, European otters, common genets, southern frogs, and even rare reptiles like the European tortoise. The marshes are also home to unique plants such as Ophioglossum-leaved buttercup, maritime iris, and scissor grass. The agricultural use of grazing and mowing maintains open spaces that provide characteristic Charentais landscapes for visitors. The course includes parts of the Vélodyssée with its 15 kilometers of cycling paths or hiking trails. Another highlight is the Lagunage Station, a unique facility in France dedicated to natural wastewater treatment across 35 hectares of water bodies. Guided tours are available to explore this space that harmoniously combines urban waste management and wildlife conservation (for more information, visit the Nature Space on Colbert Square). Respect for these sensitive areas is crucial; stay on designated paths and adhere to local regulations regarding littering. The Bio-Marathon promises a serene experience throughout all seasons of the year. Join us in this celebration of nature and endurance, where every step brings you closer to the heart of Rochefort's natural heritage.
