Dartmoor Winter Traverse 2027

Embark on an unforgettable winter adventure across Dartmoor’s rugged terrain with the Winter Traverse, scheduled for February 20th, 2027. This challenging journey offers two routes: a full 50 km trek from south to north and a shorter 30 km option starting in Princetown.
The event is designed as a supported challenge rather than a race, allowing participants the freedom to set their own pace through some of Dartmoor’s most remote areas. The longer route begins with a scenic passage around Red Lake before heading towards the sources of rivers Erme and Plym. Expect wet feet and thrilling landscapes as you navigate this wild terrain.
After enjoying a welcome break in Princetown, adventurers will venture into even more untamed regions on Dartmoor’s North Moor, encountering landmarks such as Roos Tor, Tavy Cleave, and Chat Tor. The final leg of the journey follows the Rattlebrook dismantled railway before descending to Meldon for the finish line.
Participants should prepare for unpredictable weather conditions and limited daylight hours in February. However, rest assured that Climb South West’s team will provide comprehensive support throughout the event, including navigation assistance and first aid coverage. The route is mostly unmarked across open moorland, so having a detailed map like OL 28 Dartmoor (1:25,000) or BMC Dartmoor (1:40,000), along with GPS technology provided by the event organizers, will be crucial.
For those opting for the full distance, previous experience in marathons and long-distance trail runs is highly recommended. The 30 km route, while still challenging, can be completed by anyone with a solid level of fitness. Both routes offer an immersive exploration of Dartmoor’s natural beauty and are best tackled at your own comfortable pace.
Transport options to the start line and back will also be available for purchase separately, ensuring that participants have all the necessary support to make this event both accessible and enjoyable.
