The Clitheroe 10k is an annual race that honors the memory of David Staff, who tragically passed away at age 17 due to Hyperthropic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy. This condition affects young athletes and claims about eight lives each week in fit individuals engaging in sports activities. Registration for this meaningful event begins promptly at 10:00 AM from The Kiosk, a familiar meeting spot that has been used since the race's inception. Participants gather here to start their journey along the scenic route of Clitheroe’s woodlands and moors at 11:30 AM. The course remains largely unchanged from its successful layout in 2014. Runners begin on a main path opposite The Kiosk, where they turn left past the bandstand before exiting through the Lychgate carpark near Sunnyhurst pub. From there, runners follow a concrete path up to Waterman's Cottage and continue onto Darwen Tower. The ascent offers breathtaking views of the surrounding moors as participants push forward towards the summit at Darwen Tower. After reaching this high point, the descent retraces similar paths back into the woods, passing by Sunnyhurst pub once again before returning to The Bandstand for a finish line celebration. This event is more than just a race; it's an opportunity to raise awareness and funds for Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY), a charity dedicated to heart screening among young people. Since David’s untimely death, his father Granville has raised over £100,000 through various initiatives, including this annual run. Over 60 individuals have been identified with potential heart defects thanks to screenings funded by these efforts. By participating in the Clitheroe 10k, runners not only honor David's legacy but also contribute directly towards saving lives and preventing similar tragedies from occurring. The race is open to all participants aged 14 years or older, ensuring that this tribute remains accessible while maintaining a safe environment for young athletes. Join us as we celebrate the life of David Staff and support an important cause in our community. This event invites runners to experience the beauty of Clitheroe’s woodlands and moors while remembering a promising athlete whose impact continues through ongoing charitable work. The race is not just about crossing the finish line but also about making a difference for young people's health and safety.
