Set against the historic backdrop of Waters Farm, nestled on a hilltop in Sutton, Massachusetts, Dead Last Ultra offers an unparalleled ultramarathon experience that challenges both body and spirit. This unique race takes place at a 1757 homestead preserved as part of America's cultural heritage, where participants will loop through scenic trails and open pastures under the watchful eyes of century-old barns.
The course itself is a 4.2-mile circuit, traversing half wooded paths along serene Lake Manchaug and the other half across expansive farm fields dotted with historic structures. Runners have exactly one hour to complete each lap; those who fall short are eliminated from competition. The race continues in this manner until just one runner remains—the true victor of Dead Last Ultra.
As daylight gives way to cool, crisp New England nights, competitors face a relentless test of endurance and strategy. With the potential for races lasting up to 48 hours or more, participants must adapt their approach as conditions shift from day into night. The loop reveals different challenges under moonlight, demanding both physical stamina and mental fortitude.
In addition to the intense racing action, Saturday transforms Waters Farm into a vibrant community festival with activities open to all visitors. An accessible 4.2-mile run for non-competitors kicks off early morning, followed by live music performances, food trucks serving local delicacies, and vendor stalls showcasing regional crafts and goods. Families are welcome to join the festivities while cheering on their loved ones.
Registration tiers start at $125 for early birds securing spots among the first 100 runners; prices rise incrementally with later entries up to a cap of 150 participants. Entry fees cover an exclusive Out to Pasture finisher shirt and token, while only the final standing runner earns the coveted Dead Last buckle.
Dead Last Ultra aims to secure USATF sanctioning status as well as qualify for Big's Backyard Ultra series recognition, adding another layer of prestige to this already unique event.
