The Dick Evans Memorial Road Race stands as the pinnacle of Hawaii's bike racing season, honoring the legacy of cycling icon Dick Evans through its challenging and scenic course. Spanning 110 miles, this route closely mirrors that of the original Around Oahu Race, making it a significant event for both seasoned racers and enthusiasts. The race begins at Kalama Valley Shopping Center before weaving through Waikiki, Downtown Honolulu, Pearl City, and Waipahu at a controlled pace. As participants enter Kunia Road, they transition into more challenging terrain, following the main highway to Haleiwa along the North Shore's breathtaking coastline. The route then loops back via Kaneohe Bay, Waimanalo, and Hawaii Kai, offering stunning views of the island. A neutral zone ensures a safe start for all competitors before the peloton begins its journey. Cyclists who fall behind must adhere strictly to traffic laws. Aid stations are strategically placed at key points: atop Kunia Road's ascent, in Kahuku, Temple Valley, and Olomana, ensuring that riders receive support when needed. This race caters to cyclists of all levels, with a moving police enclosure providing safety for the main group. Mechanical assistance is limited but available through sag wagons, making it essential for participants to be prepared throughout the course. A support vehicle is not guaranteed for those unable to complete the route. Awards await top performers: perpetual trophies for first-place men and women, individual awards for the top three in each category, and a best team award for the leading four male teams and two female teams based on points or placing (team names must be displayed during BikeReg registration). Registration is open until August 21st at BikeReg.com. The entry fee of $200 includes all necessary race licenses. Riders must have either an annual or one-day USAC Race License. Packet pickup will take place from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM on Saturday, August 22nd, at Boca Bike Shop located at 330 Cooke St in Honolulu, HI 96813. Early registration is encouraged as this race has limited spots available. On the day of the event, riders can check-in between 5:00 AM and 5:25 AM for late packet pickup. A mandatory rider meeting follows at 5:30 AM before the start at 5:45 AM. The finish line offers refreshments such as drinks and snacks in Kalama Valley Park; however, alcohol is strictly prohibited. The award ceremony and post-race festivities will commence by 4:30 PM, marking a celebratory end to this challenging yet rewarding race.
