Empower the Exceptional 5k & Fun Run

The Empower the Exceptional 5K & Fun Run returns to Memphis, Tennessee on Saturday, September 19th, 2026. This is our ninth annual Superhero-themed event designed to empower individuals with disabilities both locally and internationally.
Race morning finds participants gathering at Overton Park, known for its lush green spaces and scenic walking paths. The atmosphere is electric as runners line up along the firm yet slightly soft surface of the course, which runs through the park's well-maintained trails and around picturesque ponds. This year, some favorite features are returning—costume contests, team prizes, door prizes, medals with handmade lanyards from Africa for top finishers in each age group.
The Empower the Exceptional 5K & Fun Run has been a cornerstone of our community since its inception nine years ago. Over time, it's grown to include hundreds of participants annually and continues to support Exceptional Connections International, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering people with disabilities worldwide. This year’s event will benefit from the participation of both adults and children in either the 5K or the fun run.
The course venue is wheelchair accessible, ensuring that everyone can participate safely and comfortably. The race begins promptly at 8:30 am on Saturday, September 19th, with the 5k runners setting off first followed by those participating in the fun run immediately after. Clear markings of orange cones and arrows will guide participants throughout.
Weather conditions predict a moderate UV index and comfortable temperatures around the mid-70s Fahrenheit, making it an ideal day for running despite the firm but slightly soft surface potentially offering some traction challenges due to its condition on race morning. With these conditions, runners can expect clear skies and mild winds, ensuring a pleasant experience under sunny or partly cloudy weather.

Registration is now open at https://raceroster.com/events/2026/129725/empower-the-exceptional-5k-and-fun-run. The registration fee for the 5K and fun run are $34.09 and $28.74 respectively, while t-shirts will be available to those who register by August 30th, 2026 (t-shirt only guaranteed if registered before this date). Bib pick-up is scheduled for Friday, September 18th from 4-6 pm at Fleet Feet Memphis—be sure to bring a photo ID. The race begins promptly at Overton Park, and we ask that fun runners line up behind the 5K runners.
First-time participants are encouraged to prepare by bringing their bibs and ensuring they have appropriate footwear for the slightly soft terrain. This event is not only a celebration of fitness but also an opportunity to contribute to a worthy cause—helping individuals with disabilities in under-resourced communities around the world, making it truly worth attending this year.
