Welcome to Flying Acorn, the second annual trail running celebration set amidst the scenic beauty of Squirrel Hills Trail Park. Located near Minnedosa, this vibrant community was founded by four Métis families along the Little Saskatchewan River Valley and is now home to a diverse network of trails that cater to runners of all levels. Flying Acorn offers three distinct race options: a 5k, a 10k, and a half marathon (21.1km), each designed to showcase the park’s varied terrain and breathtaking views. The trail system features both established double-track paths and newly constructed single tracks that wind through lush forests and open meadows. The 5k race covers approximately 5.4 kilometers with about 90 meters of elevation change, following a loop around the Perimeter Trail consisting of Cenovus Energy Unity Trail and Les Métis Way. The 10k route extends to roughly 10.6 kilometers, offering runners a mix of grassy double tracks and single-track magic, culminating in a thrilling descent followed by an ascent back to the start. For those seeking a longer adventure, the half marathon doubles up on the challenging yet rewarding 10k course with approximately 380 meters of elevation gain. Each distance provides opportunities for runners to push their limits while enjoying panoramic vistas and engaging with fellow enthusiasts along the way. The event is particularly welcoming to newcomers to trail running, offering a supportive environment that encourages enjoyment over competition. Flying Acorn has earned Trail Sisters Approved status, ensuring equal treatment and amenities for women participants, including menstrual product availability at aid stations and specific apparel options. Race day features fully designed race shirts by Headsweats, custom finisher medals, awards for top male and female runners in each category, and a post-race pizza party sponsored by Pizza Cabin. Aid stations are strategically placed along the routes to provide hydration, snacks, and energy boosts throughout your run. Registration packets can be picked up at Sunrise Credit Union Pavilion on Friday evening or early Saturday morning before race start times: 7:30 am for the half marathon, 8:00 am for the 10k, and 8:45 am for the 5k. Mandatory racer meetings precede each event to ensure smooth execution. First Aid services will be available at both the starting line and finish area as well as on call throughout the park during race hours until noon. Participants are encouraged to bring their own water bottles, as this is a cupless event designed to minimize waste. Join us for an unforgettable day of running in one of Manitoba’s most picturesque trail systems, surrounded by like-minded individuals who share your passion for outdoor adventure and community spirit. The Flying Acorn team looks forward to seeing you at Squirrel Hills Trail Park!
