GrassRoots Backyard Ultra returns for its sixth edition on Saturday, June 26, 2027, inviting runners from near and far to experience the unique challenge of this endurance race. Nestled just south of Calgary in Okotoks, the event offers a scenic course that winds along the picturesque Sheep River pathway. Each loop covers 6.71 kilometres with an elevation gain of 34 metres, providing both road and single-track trail elements. The GrassRoots Backyard Ultra is renowned for its simplicity yet profound challenge: runners must complete one lap every hour to remain in contention. The event starts at the top of each hour, punctuated by warning whistles three minutes before commencement and a final bell as competitors begin their loop. Should a runner fail to finish within this strict timeframe or miss the starting corral for the next lap, they are disqualified. In 2026, ninety-two runners took on the challenge with forty-two of them completing at least fifteen hours (100 kilometres). The youngest participant was twenty years old while the oldest was seventy-three, showcasing that age is no barrier to this grueling yet rewarding race. With a course record still standing at thirty-five loops set by Preston Schaffer in 2024, every competitor aims for their personal best. For those not ready to take on the full "last runner standing" title, timed events are available: BY15 and BY24 offer participants the chance to run 15 hours (100.65 km) or 24 hours (100 miles), respectively. These races follow identical rules but have a defined finish time rather than relying on being the last runner standing. Okotoks, with its proximity to Calgary and charming amenities like hotels, restaurants, and family attractions, makes for an ideal basecamp during race weekend. The Lions Campground offers camping options right across from the start/finish area, ensuring runners are close to their starting point early in the morning. Registration opens on August 4, 2026, providing ample time for participants to secure a spot and prepare for this unforgettable experience. Early registration is encouraged as spots fill up quickly due to high demand. Transfers can be made until June 1, 2027, with an administration fee of $20. Join the GrassRoots Backyard Ultra community on race day and discover your limits one loop at a time. Will you answer the bell?
