The Great River Ride 2026 marks its 39th anniversary and continues to be one of the premier century rides in America. Spanning over 108 miles, this scenic route offers cyclists a unique experience through the Eastern Berkshires, featuring breathtaking views, challenging hills, and picturesque countryside. Starting from the banks of the Westfield River, participants will traverse a mix of pavement, gravel, dirt, and seasonal roads, including sections that follow a gated road closed to motor vehicles. The 72-mile Gravel Route is particularly noteworthy for its stunning vistas along the East Branch of the Westfield River, passing through Knightville Meadows, Rainbow Pool, Little Gorge, and Chesterfield Gorge. Highlights include the moderately difficult Thayer Rd., which spans 1.4 miles with a maximum grade of 10%, as well as long descents that offer thrilling downhill experiences. Cyclists can choose between two bailout options: a gravel climb up Maynard Rd. or a paved ascent to East River Hill, both leading to Spud Stop at Chester Hill Church. For those seeking an easier route, the Winery Ride offers 28 miles of flat terrain along the Columbia Greenway Rail Trail and New Haven/Northampton Canal Trail, with a stop for refreshments at Brignole Vineyard. Another option is the 42-mile road route that includes one moderate climb through Granville Gorge, offering cyclists a choice to return via rolling roads or the rail trail. Post-ride entertainment awaits participants in the form of live music and a buffet from 2:00 PM to 5:30 PM. The event is family-friendly, with free entry for children under 16 when accompanied by an adult rider. The Great River Ride supports local cycling advocacy efforts through New Horizons Bikes and Friends of the Columbia Greenway Rail Trail (FOCGRT), ensuring that this vital community project continues to thrive. This rain or shine event promises a memorable experience, with staffed refreshment stops and SAG vehicles available for assistance. Cyclists are encouraged to prepare for mechanical issues and flats by carrying appropriate tools and spare tubes. Tire widths of 38mm or wider are recommended due to the route's challenging terrain. With its rich history and stunning natural beauty, the Great River Ride 2026 is an event not to be missed for any serious cyclist.
