HALSTEAD & ESSEX MARATHON

Halstead & Essex Marathon, returning on May 9th, 2027, is more than just a race; it's an annual celebration of community spirit and athletic prowess. Originating over three decades ago when Colin Richer and members of Halstead Road Runners laid the groundwork for this beloved event, the marathon has since grown into a cherished tradition in North Essex.
The 42-kilometer course winds through scenic low-traffic roads that meander around rolling hills, lush woodlands, and serene farmlands. Known for its welcoming atmosphere, the race attracts runners from across the UK and beyond who come to experience this stunning region of England. Participants often comment on how the beauty of their surroundings enhances their running experience.
In addition to being a part of the Essex Road Running Championships series open to those born in or residents of Essex for at least nine months, Halstead & Essex Marathon is recognized for its commitment to community service and local charities. In 2025, it received the England Athletics East Region Community Volunteer Project of the Year award. Last year alone, over £5,000 was raised through race proceeds.
The current course records stand at an impressive 2:28:08 for men and 2:53:22 for women. Runners who break these marks will receive a £200 prize. For those interested in walking the full distance, it's important to note that completion times over seven hours are not permitted.
Entry fees vary based on UK Athletics affiliation status, with early bird discounts available until soon after which standard prices apply: £43 for affiliated runners and £45 for non-affiliated participants (early bird offers); thereafter, the rates rise to £53 for affiliated runners and £55 for non-affiliated runners. The event has a cap of 500 entries.
No refunds or deferrals will be issued in case of withdrawal or no-show on race day; however, refund insurance is available as an option at time of entry purchase until one week before the event when transfers are still possible but card payment entries may also be made on-site if space allows.
