The Eight Stations Ultra is an exhilarating trail running adventure designed for those who thrive on challenging terrain and scenic routes. This 50K race, which spans approximately 31 miles with nearly 3,400 feet of elevation gain, promises a journey through varied landscapes filled with mud, rocks, and dense forests. The event's unique feature is its route that passes by eight historic railway stations along the way—hence the name. Starting in Pickering and concluding at Whitby Leisure Centre on West Cliffe Avenue, runners will traverse much of the course alongside picturesque railways where steam trains occasionally chug past, adding a nostalgic touch to the experience. The partially self-navigational route is supported by detailed maps, step-by-step instructions, and GPX files provided beforehand. Race organizers ensure that participants are fully tracked using Open Tracking technology for safety and peace of mind throughout their journey. A 13-hour cutoff allows both runners and quick walkers ample time to complete the course while enjoying its scenic beauty. Checkpoints along the route provide essential provisions such as water, fizzy drinks, oranges, bananas, flapjacks, vegan sweets, salted pretzels, gluten-free options like sponge cakes and meat sausage rolls, and fruit squash. These stations are strategically placed at approximately 7.5 miles (CP1), 11 miles (CP2), 15 miles (CP3), 20.8 miles (CP4), and 26 miles (CP5) to ensure runners stay hydrated and energized. Upon crossing the finish line, top male, female, non-binary, as well as age category winners in their respective divisions will be awarded trophies for their hard-earned achievements. Additionally, participants have the option of purchasing XCover insurance to secure a refund if unforeseen circumstances prevent them from attending on race day. Registration and tracker collection take place at Ryedale Sports Centre between 6:30 AM and 8:20 AM with the race starting promptly at 9:00 AM. This event is not for those seeking flat terrain; instead, it's perfect for trail runners who relish a challenge amidst stunning countryside scenery. Race day promises an atmosphere of camaraderie among participants as they navigate this historic route and celebrate their accomplishments together in Whitby.
