Experience the breathtaking beauty of the Laurel Highlands at the Johnstown Edition of Higher Ground, an event that brings together cyclists and locals to celebrate community and nature. This scenic tour offers a unique blend of challenging climbs and awe-inspiring trails through the heart of Pennsylvania’s environmental wonders. The routes are designed to honor the rugged spirit of the original Higher Ground events while providing a memorable experience for all participants. The Thirty-mile route takes you on an out-and-back adventure along the Path of the Flood and Staple Bend Tunnel trails, leading you past the Johnstown Flood Memorial Park – a poignant reminder of history’s impact. For those seeking more, the Forty-mile journey heads north towards Hinkston Run Reservoir before winding through quiet, paved roads into Summerhill. The route culminates at the Johnstown Flood Memorial Park and returns via the same trails, offering a rewarding ride that connects you with both nature and heritage. The Sixty-mile route adds an extra twist by incorporating the Rager District climb and descent back to Johnstown, providing a comprehensive test of endurance and skill. For those who crave even more challenge, the Eighty-mile route ventures into the forested Gamelands west of town before rolling down through southern roads. The final 20 miles on the Jim Mayer Riverswalk lead you up into the Rager District for an exhilarating finish. Aid station support is available along each route to ensure your safety and comfort, while the start/finish venue in downtown Johnstown offers food and drink options after your ride. All participants must check in and out to help us track completion of sections. Higher Ground aims not only to provide a fantastic cycling experience but also to contribute positively to local communities. The event is partnered with organizations such as the Pennsylvania Environmental Council, Community Foundation for the Alleghenies, Fat Jimmy's Outfitters, Thomas Automotive, New Trail Brewing, Endo TuneUp, Stan’s, Nittany Mountain Works, Footdown.cc, Freeze Thaw Cycles, and Hushmoney Bikes.
