The Hodgson Brothers Mountain Relay is an iconic fell running relay that has been captivating runners for decades. Held annually on the first Saturday of October in the heart of the Lake District Fells, this race offers competitors some of Britain's most challenging and scenic terrain. With a rich history dating back to its inception as the Ian Hodgson Mountain Relay, it has evolved into one of the longest-running mountain relay races in the country. The event attracts around 70 teams from across the North of England each year, with careful selection ensuring that only experienced clubs are granted entry due to the race's demanding nature. Each team consists of eight runners who complete four legs on hilly and rugged paths. The terrain features steep climbs and descents where precise navigation is essential—GPS devices are not permitted, making map reading a crucial skill. The relay course weaves through some of England’s most breathtaking landscapes, offering competitors an unforgettable experience as they race alongside stunning mountain vistas. Successful teams will have to navigate the elements with confidence while racing against others in their category for bragging rights and top honors. Competitors can choose from Open, Women's, Mixed Open, or Mixed Vets categories. The Mixed Vets division is particularly notable this year, requiring a team of four men and four women aged 40 years or older on race day. Entry fees are set at £100 per team for the upcoming edition in 2026. Clubs interested in participating must enter via SiEntries by August 23rd, with notifications regarding acceptance sent shortly after this deadline. Successful entrants will then be required to make their payment upon receiving an official offer of a place. The entry process is designed to ensure that each team has the necessary skills and experience for what promises to be an exhilarating day out. The Hodgson Brothers Mountain Relay remains one of the highlights on any fell runner’s calendar, offering not only intense competition but also camaraderie among participants as they share stories over post-race celebrations. Join us this October 3rd in the Lake District Fells and experience why this event continues to be a beloved tradition for so many.
