Fell Race: A Challenging Journey Across Holcombe Moor
On Wednesday, August 26, 2026, runners will gather at the Hare & Hounds Pub on Bolton Road West in Bury to embark on a grueling yet rewarding trek across Holcombe Moor. This 4-mile (6.5km) race offers an exhilarating mix of steep ascents and descents, winding paths through Redisher Woods, and panoramic views that will take your breath away—literally and figuratively.
The route begins just half a mile from the pub's doors, where competitors must navigate Holcombe Old Road before entering Redisher Woods. The terrain quickly reveals its rugged nature with numerous punishing climbs dotting the course, each ascent more daunting than the last. Competitors will find themselves traversing a landscape that includes rocky outcrops and dense woodland sections.
As daylight begins to fade towards the end of the race, runners will pass through Redisher Woods once again before making their final push toward the finish line. The organizers recommend bringing headtorches if you feel it might be necessary for visibility during this twilight stretch.
The route is clearly marked with flags throughout, but participants are responsible for following them accurately and ensuring their own safety along the way. A cut-off time of 1 hour and 15 minutes will apply when runners meet Moorbottom Road for a second time; those arriving after this point will still receive an official finish time.
Registration requires full Fell Runners Association (FRA) kit, and on-the-day entries are available. The event encourages car sharing to minimize environmental impact while maximizing the experience of tackling Holcombe's challenging terrain together.
