In the heart of Virginia's serene landscapes, Lake Anna State Park hosts Athletic Equation’s ICY-8 race series for its 19th year. This winter tradition invites trail runners to experience a unique blend of adventure and challenge amidst the park’s picturesque trails and stunning waterfront views.
The event offers two exciting options: an 8-mile run and a half marathon+. Both routes incorporate Lake Anna State Park's diverse terrain, offering participants a taste of both single-track and double-track trails. The shorter option is designed to introduce runners to trail running essentials by completing the park’s long loop with approximately 640 feet in elevation change. Participants are required to carry hydration supplies and energy gels for safety.
For those seeking an extended challenge, the half marathon+ course weaves through three distinct loops: a lengthy 8-mile circuit, followed by shorter segments of 4.7 miles and 1.5 miles. Each loop presents varying levels of elevation gain and loss, culminating in over 90% trail running on routes that are generally about six feet wide.
The race begins at the Lake Anna Visitor Center parking area with a staggered start for both distances: the half marathon+ starts promptly at 7:30 AM alongside the traditional ICY-8 Trail Race. Runners have up to six hours to complete their distance, ensuring ample time to tackle each loop while enjoying the park's natural beauty.
