The city of Konitsa and Epirus athletic events are thrilled to announce the highly anticipated return of the Konitsa Race! On September 14, 2025, this picturesque town nestled in northern Greece will come alive with energy as runners and cyclists converge on its charming streets for an unforgettable day. Following the overwhelming success of last year’s inaugural event, the second edition promises to be bigger, bolder, and more ambitious than ever. For the first time, in collaboration with mountainvein outdoor activities office, a 130-kilometer cycling race will take place alongside the traditional trail run, adding another layer of excitement. The centerpiece of this year’s event is undoubtedly the Smolika Mountain, Greece's second-highest peak at an impressive elevation. This majestic summit serves as the focal point for athletes and visitors alike, offering a challenging yet rewarding route that showcases both natural beauty and historical significance. For runners, there's the 14-kilometer trail run starting from Konitsa’s central square at 9:30 AM on September 6th, 2025. The race course follows an ancient path used by Saint Paisios himself before ascending to a checkpoint at Stomiou Monastery (780 meters). With a total elevation gain of 670 meters, this leg-testing route provides both breathtaking views and steep climbs. The cycling event, known as "Tour de Smolika," starts earlier on September 14th with cyclists pedaling out from Konitsa at 8:30 AM. This grueling yet scenic journey covers a total distance of 130 kilometers through some of Greece's most stunning landscapes and historic villages. Competitors will encounter picturesque hilltops, charming hamlets, and challenging climbs as they traverse the route, passing landmarks such as Souvnitsa Ridge, Free Village, Palioseli, Pades, Armatas, Distratou, Basilica Winter Sports Center, Samarina, Romiou Ridge, Fourgka, Agia Paraskevi (Kerasovo), Plaka Summit and more before returning to Konitsa’s central square. Both races offer a variety of prizes for top finishers in various categories. The trail run awards include cash prizes up to €200 for the overall male and female winners, while cyclists can earn up to €300 each in their respective gender divisions. In addition to these main events, there's also a one-kilometer children’s race designed to inspire future generations of athletes. Safety is paramount at Konitsa Race 2. Medical support will be provided by the Samaritan Society of the Greek Red Cross and participants are encouraged to undergo medical clearance before competing. Cyclists and runners alike can expect well-stocked aid stations, photography coverage, finish medals, race day merchandise discounts from White Soul clothing store in Konitsa, and more. With its mix of natural beauty, historical significance, and competitive spirit, the 2025 Konitsa Race promises to be an event not soon forgotten. Konitsa is a town of Ioannina in Epirus, Greece. It is located north of the capital Ioannina and near the Albanian border. Konitsa lies northeast of a group of villages known as the Zagorochoria.
