The "Planata degli Iblei" marathon is an exhilarating journey through the heart of Sicily's Hyblaean Mountains, offering runners a unique blend of history and breathtaking natural beauty. Starting from the uplands, this point-to-point race follows the old railway line that once connected mountain villages along SP n.10 at a leisurely pace. The course begins with a smooth descent of 1-2% gradient, leading down to Ragusa where runners will find themselves at an elevation of 620 meters above sea level. The Hyblaean plateau unfolds before you, characterized by expansive tablelands bordered by traditional dry stone walls and dramatic rock formations known as "Cave." These rugged landscapes are dotted with ancient necropolises like Cava Volpe, Cava del Paradiso, Misericordia, and Cava Celone, each steeped in rich history. As the race progresses through Contrada Majorana, runners will encounter scenic plateaus adorned with historic farmhouses. The route then dips into Tresauro for a significant climb of 400 meters at a gradient of 2.5%, marking one of two major elevation changes on this course. Here, rolling hills and the scent of the sea signal your approach to Donnafugata Castle—a magnificent manor that has featured prominently in Italian literature and media such as "The Leopard" by Tomasi di Lampedusa and Inspector Montalbano. From Donnafugata Castle, runners enjoy a gentle descent through olive groves and carob trees en route to Santa Croce Camerina. The final stretch of the race leads you along Punta Secca's enchanting coastline, passing by the iconic House of Commissioner Montalbano before reaching the finish line. This event celebrates not only athletic achievement but also the camaraderie among runners and the joy of experiencing Sicily’s unique landscapes and cultural heritage. Join us for a memorable day in one of Italy’s most picturesque settings—where every step tells a story. Experience the magic of "Planata degli Iblei" as you run through stunning scenery, historical sites, and charming villages. This marathon is more than just a race; it's an adventure into Sicily's soul.
