Lake District Running Festival

The centerpiece of the event is undoubtedly the Grasmere 24-Hour Ultra Trail Run on June 5th, which begins at midday with a stunning 5km loop around Grasmere Lake. Participants can choose between solo or team competition (with teams limited to four runners), each completing as many laps as possible within the time limit while adhering to strict cut-off times every hour. The route winds along the lake’s rocky shoreline and through lush trails, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding fells.
For those who prefer shorter races, a variety of trail runs are available on Saturday morning starting at 11:30am:
- A family-friendly 5.7km race around Grasmere Lake.
- A more challenging 10k, which includes both flat and hilly terrain for runners seeking a bit more elevation gain.
- An exhilarating 17km trail run, perfect for those looking to push their endurance limits.
All races are fully waymarked with clear signage and support along the route. Post-race festivities include free event photography and a celebratory cake at the finish line.
In addition to competitive racing, the festival offers unique events such as an OMM Lite Trail Quest on June 6th, where participants navigate through checkpoints scattered across Grasmere using only maps and compasses. This engaging activity challenges both mental acuity and physical endurance, rewarding teams or individuals who collect the most points within a set time limit.
The Lake District Running Festival also includes fun activities for younger competitors with events like the Teddy Dash for under 5s and their toy companions, as well as a Kids Fun Run of approximately 1km. These races provide an enjoyable introduction to running in a supportive environment.
Participants have the option to purchase additional amenities such as camping or day parking passes, which sold out quickly last year due to high demand.
