As summer fades into autumn, the Swiss Alps near Lake Geneva offer an unforgettable cycling experience with the Tour of Stations. Held each year at the end of August, this event promises breathtaking scenery and challenging terrain that will leave you awed.
The race takes place around Sion, Sierre, and Le Châble, a ski resort transformed into a cyclist’s paradise during summer months. The well-maintained roads wind through picturesque villages connected by lush forests, rolling vineyards, and towering mountains. At nightfall, the atmosphere shifts to lively celebrations as locals come out in droves for this annual event.
The Tour of Stations features several routes catering to different levels of cyclists:
- Ultrafondo: This grueling 240 km route with nearly 9,000 meters of elevation gain is a true test of endurance. Cyclists face ten formidable climbs and conquer the distance starting as early as 2:30 am under moonlight.

- Superfondo: Spanning 186 kilometers, this challenging course includes over 4,700 meters in elevation with steep ascents and descents.
- Marmotte Granfondo: Covering a slightly less daunting but still demanding 132 km route, the Marmotte Granfondo challenges riders to climb nearly 7,000 meters of vertical gain.
For those seeking something more manageable:
- Mediofondo: A leisurely start at 8:00 am allows cyclists to enjoy around 94 kilometers and a bit over 1,500 meters in elevation gains before the day’s end.
The event also includes a junior route for younger participants. Each course offers unique challenges, from steep climbs to long stretches of winding roads through scenic landscapes.
After crossing the finish line, take time to explore Switzerland's natural beauty with numerous hiking trails and thermal spas nearby. From the Conches Valley to Chablais-Valaisan at the French border, there are endless opportunities for relaxation or adventure.
