About the Event

Immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of Dutch culture at the Leiden Marathon, where every step takes you through centuries of history and scenic landscapes. Starting and finishing in the heart of historic Leiden—a city renowned for its 900-year legacy and as Rembrandt’s birthplace—this marathon offers a unique blend of urban charm and rural beauty.
The race route winds from bustling cobblestone streets into serene countryside, featuring traditional windmills, tranquil canals, expansive polders, and quaint villages. Participants experience the quintessential Dutch landscape up close, all within one scenic loop that showcases both city life and pastoral tranquility.
Since its inception in 1991, the Leiden Marathon has become a beloved event, celebrated for its exceptional organization, personal touch, and welcoming atmosphere. With over 24,000 runners participating annually—many of whom are first-time marathoners—the race caters to both seasoned athletes chasing PRs and newcomers enjoying every mile.
The generous six-hour time limit makes the Leiden Marathon accessible to a wide range of participants, fostering an inclusive spirit that combines large-scale international appeal with intimate community engagement.
