The Malta Marathon stands as one of Europe's longest-running marathon events, celebrated for its exceptional organization and vibrant atmosphere. In 2025, the race welcomed an unprecedented number of participants from over eighty countries, solidifying its status as the largest and most popular event in Malta. Both the full marathon and half marathon adhere to World Athletics Technical & Competition regulations, ensuring a fair and competitive environment. The courses are predominantly downhill, starting at 195 meters above sea level and finishing right on the shoreline, making them ideal for fast times. This unique elevation profile has contributed to record-breaking performances in recent years. The men's full marathon record is an impressive 2:13 while the women’s stands at 2:35. Similarly, the half marathons have their own remarkable records of 1:02 and 1:13 for men and women respectively. These times are recognized by prestigious races around the globe such as Boston, Berlin, and Comrades. Over its long history, the routes of both events have evolved to incorporate less congested roads and faster stretches, taking advantage of Malta’s compact yet varied landscape. The journey begins at Mdina's ancient fortified walls, a medieval gem that sets an inspiring scene for runners from around the world. As participants make their way through the race, they are treated to live music performances along the route, enhancing the festive spirit. The course weaves through picturesque countryside and bustling urban areas before concluding in Sliema’s renowned natural harbor, where yachts dot the waterways during the final kilometers. Convenient transportation from Sliema ensures that runners can easily reach the start line on race day, while efficient post-race logistics allow participants to collect their clothes bags after crossing the finish. Race registration is handled smoothly at Sliema, providing all entrants with essential items such as bib numbers, commemorative T-shirts, official magazines, and clothing bags. Upon finishing, runners are greeted with San Michel water, Powerade for hydration, and a banana to refuel before heading back to their accommodations on foot. The Malta Marathon offers an unforgettable blend of history, scenic beauty, and world-class competition that has made it a must-run event for marathon enthusiasts worldwide. Race organizers continue to refine the course each year, ensuring runners experience the very best of what Malta has to offer in terms of terrain, weather conditions, and support.

About Mdina
Learn more about the host city, Mdina.
Mdina is a small city in Malta and its former capital. The town is a joy to stroll around in: many of the alleys really give the sense that nothing has changed here for more than a millennium since the Arabs were here. The main attractions are the cathedral whose design inspired many of the other churches in Malta and the cathedral museum. The view from the city walls makes it plain why this site was chosen in ancient times, one has a commanding view over most of the island from here.
