The participation kit, which includes the official race t-shirt and bib, must be collected on Saturday, May 16, at the Sport Expo located in the Centro de Congressos de Lisboa (Junqueira area). No kits are delivered on the day of the race, making the Saturday Expo a vital hub for all 14,000 expected participants.
Breast cancer remains the most common form of cancer among women in Portugal. According to data from the Global Cancer Observatory (GCO) and the Portuguese League Against Cancer, approximately 7,000 new cases are diagnosed annually in the country, resulting in roughly 1,800 deaths per year. While the disease affects all demographic groups, research by the University of Porto indicates that late-stage diagnoses are more prevalent in socio-economically vulnerable populations. Specifically, in terms of broader demographics in Portugal, data suggests that the incidence rate is roughly 1 in 8 women during their lifetime. While Portugal does not officially track race-based medical statistics with the same granularity as the US, European health studies indicate that White/Caucasian women have the highest incidence rates, but Black/Afro-descendant women often face higher mortality rates due to more aggressive tumor subtypes (such as triple-negative) and diagnostic delays.
Organized by the Maratona Clube de Portugal, the Mimosa Corrida Pela Vida is part of a larger weekend of running that contributes to Lisbon's reputation as a top-tier destination for "SuperHalfs" and international running enthusiasts. Beyond the physical challenge, the event serves as a high-visibility platform for the Portuguese League Against Cancer to educate the public on the importance of early detection. The 5km distance is intentionally accessible, ensuring that survivors, families, and supporters of all ages can walk or run together in solidarity.
