Nestled within the serene landscapes of DeSoto National Forest, just south of Laurel, Mississippi, lies the renowned Mississippi Trail Ultra Race. Now entering its 30th year, this annual gathering invites trail runners to challenge themselves on a meticulously crafted course that weaves through gently rolling pine forests and scenic single-track trails. The event offers four distinct distances: the grueling 100-mile race, the marathon-length 50K, the challenging 20K, and the full marathon (42.2 km) distance of 50 miles. Participants can choose from these options based on their endurance goals, with each offering unique challenges and breathtaking views. For those daring enough to take up the ultimate challenge, the 100-mile event kicks off at noon on Friday, March 6th, with a strict time limit of 30 hours. Runners are required to complete all seven 12.5-mile loops plus two final 6.1-mile segments before reaching the cutoff point by Saturday evening. The shorter distances begin early Saturday morning, allowing participants flexibility in adjusting their race strategy should they find themselves needing more manageable goals mid-run. The 50K and 50M races have a 12-hour time limit dictated by National Forest Service permits, with specific cut-off times ensuring that runners can complete the required loops within this timeframe. All events conclude at 6 pm on Saturday, allowing for an afternoon of camaraderie and celebration among participants. Post-race food is available right after crossing the finish line, providing a warm welcome to all who have pushed their limits in these stunning natural surroundings. Packet pickup takes place Friday night for the longer distances and early morning for the shorter races at the trailhead near the start/finish area within the DeSoto National Forest. The event's location offers runners an intimate connection with nature through its pine-dotted trails, making it a perfect setting to test one’s endurance while enjoying the beauty of Mississippi. Participants who complete their respective distances will receive finisher mementos and belt buckles for both 50-mile and 100-mile achievements. The race is sanctioned by MUTS (Mississippi Ultra Trail Series), ensuring that all participants are part of a well-regulated event with proper safety measures in place.
